Favia corals, also known as moon corals or pineapple corals, are popular choices for aquariums due to their unique appearance and ability to thrive in a variety of environments. If you're considering adding Favia corals to your aquarium, here's what you need to know about caring for them.

First, it's important to understand the basics of Favia corals. They are a type of LPS (large polyp stony) coral that have fleshy, dome-shaped structures with large, tentacle-like polyps. In the wild, they can be found in a range of colors, from green and brown to shades of purple, blue and even fluorescent colors.

When it comes to caring for Favia corals in your aquarium, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Lighting: Favia corals don't require intense lighting like some other coral species, but they do require moderate levels of light. You can use LED lights or fluorescent lights, with a spectrum of around 400-500nm.

  2. Water parameters: Favia corals prefer stable and consistent water parameters, with a pH level of around 8.0-8.4 and a temperature range of 74-78°F. Keep an eye on the calcium, alkalinity and magnesium levels in your water and make sure they are within the acceptable range.

  3. Water flow: Favia corals prefer moderate water flow, so consider a powerhead or wave maker to create gentle currents in your aquarium.

  4. Feeding: Favia corals are photosynthetic and obtain nutrients through zooplankton and other small prey that drift by. They can also be fed with a variety of commercially available coral foods, which can be broadcast-fed or target-fed using a pipette feeder.

  5. Placement: Favia corals are known to have sweeper tentacles that can extend during the night to catch prey or defend their space. As such, make sure to leave enough distance between Favia corals and other corals in your tank to avoid any stinging or aggressive behavior.

By following these guidelines, your Favia corals should thrive in your aquarium and provide a unique and colorful addition to your collection. As with any coral species, make sure to keep an eye on their health and adjust care as needed.
